Anne-Marie Balke

Anne Marie was a vibrant, passionate light who came to life when she danced. I hope this scholarship allows someone to follow in her dance shoes and enjoy the program as much as she did.

Anne-Marie Balke was truly like a ray of sunshine for all those who knew her; her warmth and kindness made all those near her prosper and grow. I will always miss enjoying the California sunlight with her as she encouraged me to take on life’s many challenges with laughter, ease, and a sense of contagious adventure. I reread some of the letters Anne-Marie sent to me and looked through some of photos that I have of her. What strikes me most is her genuine smile and her intellect. While many of us were caught up in our appearance due to teenage insecurities, Anne-Marie always had the most beautiful authentic smile. She knew who she was and she was not afraid to be her true self. I agree with your words that she had a zest for life. She was courageous and adventurous. She loved to travel, taste new foods, and explore different cultures. However, she was also proud of her German heritage. She took great pride in showing me the places that she loved to frequent growing up in Solingen. When I visited her in Germany, she allowed me to partake in certain traditions with your family such as raclette, touring the Christmas markets (drinking too much Gluhwein, of course), lighting red Christmas candles, and noshing on the most scrumptious waffles topped with fluffy whipped cream and cherries. She was also incredibly sharp. She enjoyed reading nonfiction books and watching independent films about different subjects because it enriched her understanding of herself and humanity. She was also conscientious. She lived in a gentle way with respect to animals (through her vegetarianism) and the environment. She always was such a wonderful friend to me, very often providing me with a listening ear and encouragement.
